While weeding an embarrassingly neglected part of my garden, I just found eight little Miscanthus babies amongst the other thugs. I didn't even know Miscanthus grasses self-seed, and especially not that they just in one season produce sturdy little babies that would perfectly fit a pint sized container.
I'd been thinking of sowing some tall grasses to fill up an area that desperately needs some 'vertical interest', but now I just moved these little guys there, hoping that they'll grow as fast they have until now. There are still several smaller seedlings left that I can add to the group later.
I'm not sure if this is a good decision, or if I will end up with a forest of Miscanthus in a couple of years from now. Still, I just couldn't resist using these cheeky little guys, they just looked so keen on being a part of my garden.

I would be wary. My miscanthus have been self-sowing for several years. I think some maverick miscanthus I bought from a big box store may be a problem. The more expensive ones seem to flower later and not self-sow. In the last two years, another grass, Erianthus ravennae, has started to self-sow too, and far too vigorously for comfort. I don't know whether this is a result of climate, or a true problem with this grass. But I'm on alert.
Även jag blev litet förundrad när det, som jag trodde, dök upp små miscanthus-bebisar bredvid den stora plantan. Kan den verkligen självså sig på våra breddgrader? Det vore ju fantastiskt att få nya plantor alldeles gratis! Det visade sig att det var havre. Snopet! Men du har säkert "äkta vara"!! ;-)

Även jag hade små, som jag trodde, miscanthus-bebisar bredvid moderplantan i år. Förundrad blev jag, och tänkte, att inte kan väl miscanthusen föröka sig på våra breddgrader, för det hade jag aldrig hört talas om! Det vore ju toppen att få nya plantor helt gratis!!! Men, ack och ve - det visade sig vara havre! Men du har säker "äkta vara"!!!

James, I bought the original Miscanthus as 'Morning light' for two years ago. But mine have a white midrib, and not white edges, as 'Morning light' is supposed to have (yes, I got into this mystery and REALLY looked at my plants...). So maybe they were misnamed, and more invasive than 'Morning light' which is not supposed to self-seed? I have to really think about using them, our climate is so mild that everything grows as mad.
Ruben, det är nog min skandinaviska hjärta som blir så glad för gratis nya plantor :-) Det är ju inte så mycket som självsår sig där uppe. Men nu är jag lite osäker, tänk om de självsår sig överallt i det milda klimatet i Seattle? Då har jag ju en hel prärie här helt plötsligt (inte helt tokigt, det heller, kanske)...

Ja, det är faktiskt inget skämt, fast i det här fallet rör det sig om ett blom-barn.
Jag fick ju tre olika fröer av dig, och de ville ju inte gro. Så jag tänkte, jag tar in krukorna och sår resterande fröer som fanns kvar i påsarna, och sätter ut dem igen . Vad tror du jag upptäcker? Jo, aklejan har grott!!!!
