You know you are in the tropics when...

A banana bonsai (Musa sp.)- about half a meter high, and quite cute. No fruit in sight, though...

bonsais come in the genus Musa... as in the Singapore Botanic Gardens collection. I've never encountered one before, but then, I can't really claim to be a bonsai or penjing expert either. This is an enjoyable little collection in a slightly too industrial pavilion (I think the bonsais looked a bit lonely on their perches), but well worth spending a while in.

The bonsai theater, or pavilion - and even if Singapore is very safe, it was guarded by many cameras, just in case...

A mini Chinese Banyan (Ficus macrocarpa); what a lovely tangle of air roots on a plate.

Wild water plum 'Sui Mai' (Wrightia religiosa) like a little island with huge trees.

And another tiered little Wrightia. I can't stand those white plastic signs, they stick in your eyes however much you try to ignore them.

I think I like the building--perhaps if it were painted Charleston green.

That is an excellent idea - in the heat and sun, the white is too glaring (I took down the brightness of the pictures a noch to help this in the blog post). Also, the white beams make photographing very difficult as they dominate the scene. But the form is quite stylish. I was thinking of dark, earthy aubergine color, too, but it might bee too solemn for the deep greenery around.

Vackert, fast också lite sorgligt, grips alltid av lite melankoli när jag ser bonsai träd, så mycket i en så liten skepnad. trevlig helg/Sophia

What a change finding you in Singapore!
Shows how far I've lost touch with blogs I love reading.

The banana bonsai brought a smile to my face on this Monday morning, the start of a new week of beautiful late-summer weather in Northern California. And now it seems I can sense having lost your presence on the West Coast.

James hit on a fine point. The white in no way complements the exhibit. I'm picturing the aviary at Waddeson in my mind's eye ... akin, if not the same hue as 'Charleston green.'

Hej Sophia, roligt att håra av dig, hösthälsningar dit till södra Sverige!

Hi Alice, good to hear from you, I enjoy reading you blog but comment all too seldom. I need to check out the aviary in Waddeson - maybe this could be a kind suggestion to the Botanic Gardens management here? Just a thought...
